Since 2004, the city of Zabrze, with the support of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the Ministry of Sport and Tourism, has been organizing an International Conference on Industrial Heritage and Tourism. The outreach and importance of the conference have been growing with each passing year. Its accomplishments are noticeable at the international level. The City of Zabrze has been host to this event due to its long tradition of industrial development which in turn has translated into the city’s care for its industrial heritage and its consistent use for tourism purposes. During all these years, the conference has witnessed the participation of European Union institutions, the Council of Europe, OECD and UNESCO, as well as nongovernmental organizations, such as the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH) and The International Committee for the Conservation of the Industrial Heritage (TICCIH). The first conference concluded with passing a resolution addressed to central government and local authorities, the holders of industrial heritage, the world of science and the media. As one of outcomes of our conferences, the year 2008 saw the establishment, at the UNWTO initiative, of the International Documentation and Research Centre on Industrial Heritage for Tourism in Zabrze. The 8th conference was held in conjunction with the 52nd Session of the UNWTO Commission for Europe and its technical seminar, which gathered representatives of the European Ministries responsible for tourism. The aim of that event was to review tourism policies for sustainable development based on industrial heritage.
